We received some wood stock the other day and realised we had 3 broken blank wooden bangles. So we decided to test out our top 3 putty and adhesives to see how they do with fixing the broken parts.
Here we have Bondite Epoxy Putty (RM7), Apoxie Sculpt (ranging from RM58 to RM148) and E6000 (RM28).
Let's start with E6000.
There is a list of things they cannot glue on their website so you can check it out there. Jewelry makers love this because it happens to work great with crystals, metal and glass parts.
There is however a danger warning on the product that states it needs to be used in a well ventilated area so user caution is advised.
This glue is pretty easy to use. It comes up in a thick clear paste that tends to stretch so be careful of the mess it can potentially make.
Any access of the glue is easy to wipe away. The glue needs to be left to dry overnight and can be painted over the next day. However, cleaning up has to be done before the glue dries because after it does, it has a rubbery feel that is hard to sand away.
We clamp the two ends of the bangle together with a rubberband.
Results: Glue works well. Bangle was restored the next day and could withstand pretty rough tugging.
Next, Apoxie Sculpt.
Apoxie has a range of fixing agents called FIXIT however because we've heard so much about Apoxie Sculpt we decided to use it as a fixing agent and see how it works.
Here we have Apoxie Sculpt in Yellow along with the hardener in grey. Apoxie Sculpt also comes in white and beige colours. This putty can be painted over once cured.
Mix two similar balls of Part A & B together. We kneaded it well together and used it on the bangle. Apoxie Sculpt cures in 2 to 3 hours. More than enough time to work on.
As you can see Apoxie Sculpt cleans up pretty well but will it hold?
Results: It holds great. However, like E6000 cleaning has to be done before it cured as it becomes SUPER rock hard and is a tough cookie to sand down. So best to scrap down and clean up before curing. Cured strong and restores the bangle perfectly.
Lastly, Bondite.
Like Apoxie Sculpt, Bondite needs to be kneaded together well in equal parts. It is very tacky to start off with and tends to stick to fingers.
Bondite works great at covering cracks and also bonds well with wood. It is very easy to use and clean up is easy as well.
Results: It's a tough materials and holds the wood well. Finishing is very similar to Apoxie Sculpt but rougher in texture.
Summary. All 3 adhesives worked well at repairing all 3 bangles. All 3 are waterproof and very strong. In terms of finishing, E6000 dries to a clear finish and has a rubbery latex feel. Apoxie Sculpt dries to a hard finish with a smoother surface than Bondite.
